Organ Day  26 January 2019

Recital: Callum Alger

Callum Alger gained his early musical education as a chorister at St Matthew’s Church, Northampton. It was here that he began to study the organ, and in September 2011 was appointed as the Organ Scholar. He can be heard accompanying the choir and playing a solo on the CD 'O How Glorious’.

In 2014, he then became the Michael James Organ Scholar at Portsmouth Cathedral: a joint role between the Cathedral and the Grammar School, assisting in the music departments at both establishments. He was the rehearsal pianist in preparation for the Grammar School's world premiere of a new cantata by Jonathan Dove 'For an Unknown Soldier' (written for Remembrance 2014), and accompanied the cathedral choir on their Christmas Day BBC Radio 4 broadcast.

Whilst in Portsmouth, Callum played for the Royal Yacht Squadron’s bicentenary service, in which HRH the Duke of Edinburgh was present. He was also fortunate enough to be part of the finals of the Northern Ireland International Organ Competition in Armagh, and has become Associates of both the Royal College of Organists, and Trinity College, London. He has given recitals as part of music festivals at both St Davids Cathedral, Wales and Hexham Abbey, and was, for a period of time, a deputy organist at Derby Cathedral.
In September 2018, he was fortunate enough to be able to spend a term studying at the Musikhochschule in Leipzig under the tutelage of Prof. Martin Schmeding. He regularly played the organs in the Thomaskirche and Nikolaikirche, Freiberg Cathedral, and St Wenceslas, Naumburg.

Last August, he won the inaugural IAO/RCO Organ Playing Competition in Peterborough, as part of the IAO Festival, seeing off competitors from America and Shanghai, and winning recital opportunities at Wesminster Cathedral and St Chad's Cathedral, Birmingham.

Callum is currently in his fourth year as an undergraduate student at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, studying organ with Henry Fairs. Alongside his course, he is the Acting Director of Music at The Collegiate Church of St Peter, Wolverhampton, where he regularly rehearses and directs the choirs, and trains the boy and girl choristers. Future engagements include: Wells Cathedral, Truro Cathedral and St Laurence's Church, Ludlow.

In November 2018, Callum won First Prize in the Dame Gillian Weir Messiaen Organ Competition.

Following Callum's studies, he will take up the post of Organ Scholar at Westminster Cathedral in September 2019.
