On Saturday 17 October 2026 7.00 pm, a full production of Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood is taking place, directed by Eryl Sheers, re-creating the New York performance of 1953 and the first radio broadcast of 1954.
Under Milk Wood, completed in the last year of Thomas's life, is a description of a typical day in the life of the fictitious Welsh seaside town of Llareggub (try reading it backwards). Written with affection but a close knowledge of humanity, Thomas evokes the passions, longings, and frustrations of ordinary people - charting their petty quarrels, deep yearnings, frivolity, and sadness.
Two narrators set the scene whilst larger than life characters come to the fore and then recede into the background. These include such people as:
- Polly Garter - who loves life and men all too much (and has many children to show for it);
- Mrs Ogmore-Pritchard - who drove two husbands to an early grave with her carping criticism - "Before you let the sun in, mind it wipes its shoes.";
- Mae-Rose Cottage - "Call me Dolores, like they do in the stories,":
- Captain Cat, the blind seaman - "Parlez vous jig, jig, madam,";
- Mog Edwards and Myfanwy Price - in eternal love but never together;
- ... and a whole host of others.
And, in the evergoing gossip and chit-chat, much else is revealed:
- "... when they saw me, they pretended they were looking for nests, but you don't go nesting in long combinations!!";
- "... come and sweep my chimbley, she sighed to me with a blush, come and sweep my chimbley, bring along your chimbley brush!";
- "... She's tucked her dress in her bloomers - oh, the baggage!";
- "... Here's your arsenic, dear, and your weedkiller biscuit."
You can experience the ambience of Milk Wood without having to drive to Cardiff, Newport or even Abergavenny, as it's all happening in Llanddewi Rhydderch.
During the interval and before/after the performance the bar will be open.
There will be only ONE performance and seating will be limited. You can turn up on the night and hope that you are lucky but, to be certain of a seat, book and pay in advance online.
