This event is organised by NMMA Music (part of the North Monmouthshire Ministry Area). However, participation is NOT restricted just to people from the seventeen parishes of the Area, nor only to members of the Church in Wales. It is open to anyone who feels that it is of interest to them.

If a pianist is already playing the organ, this event will widen their knowledge and increase their skill.

If a pianist is not already playing the organ, this event will give them the confidence to play when needed.

Introduction

In a number of churches, pianists are carrying out sterling work by functioning as an organist, some with very little of no training as to how an organ functions or how to accompany a congregation.

Elsewhere, there are pianists who could help out, but they feel apprehensive about venturing into unknown territory.

This afternoon caters for both categories of people.

Content

This is a survival course for pianists, not an attempt (in a two hour session) to turn them into virtuoso organists capable of playing the great repertoire. So, we won't be covering pedal playing, the refinements of organ playing, or anything else not necessary to play a hymn or simple accompaniment well. But, at the end of the afternoon, pianists will have a much clearer idea of what they can do in the context of playing for a church service.

As far as possible, participants will be given "hands on" time on the organ of the church.

There's a hierarchy in this list. We'll being at the top and work as far down as time permits.

  1. The physical differences between an organ and a piano, and how these affect playing.
  2. What the manuals and stops are, and how to identify them.
  3. Changing manuals and stops, and how best to do this.
  4. The mysteries of the expression pedal(s).
[This has nothing to do with the pedal keyboard.]
  5. Accompanying hymns.
  6. Where to find simplified hymns.
  7. Making Panic sound like Planned.
  8. Where to find repertoire.
  9. Where to find downloadable instruction manuals if you want to find out more.
  10. Where to find a teacher in your area if you want to go further.

Leader

The event will be run by Philip Norman. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists (FRCO) and holds a performing diploma from the Royal College of Music (ARCM) - but doesn't let these get in the way of understanding what elementary players need. You can read more about him HERE.
