Bach, Beethoven
and the Latin Mass
Both Bach (B minor Mass) and Beethoven (Missa Solemnis) produced epic settings of the Latin Mass, but both had very different reasons and set about their tasks with very different methods. For instance, why did a strict Lutheran compose a Latin mass? Or, did Beethoven forget about practicality? After looking at the evolution of mass settings, this talk unpicks each composer's individual characteristics and surveys these works' legacy.
This talk lasts about 60 minutes, or longer or shorter if required. All necessary equipment (projector, screen, sound system) is provided.
