Simplified Hymns

Search by hymn name, tune name, or metre

This page links to simplified arrangements of common hymns, designed to make the process of playing hymns a little easier. They are intended for manuals only. Because they are designed for easier playing and, at the same time, maintain good (reasonable?) [adequate?] harmonic writing, they do not use exactly the same chord patterns as many four-part settings of these hymns. This means that these settings cannot be used at the same time as most normal hymn book settings.

Update - August 2020: this page is a work in progress. At present, most of the hymns are for Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent and Easter. More will be added in the coming weeks, and then examples for other seasons.

For copyright reasons, only tunes that are in the Public Domain are used. So, such favourites as Hills of the North, Rejoice cannot be included. (Rest assured, at the stroke of midnight as 2028 becomes 2029, a version will go on this page.)

Read about copyright and the Public Domain HERE.

They can be used in three ways:

  • Played as written;
  • Played as written, but omitting any of the middle notes that are hard to reach
  • Played melody only, but the accompanying chords being added at the beginning and ends of text lines. For instance, While Shepherds Watched could be played like this: example of while shepherds watched simplified more

Also, if more convenient in the accompanying parts, tied notes may be repeated or repeated notes tied at will.

The main thing is that the melody should flow regularly and without unexpected pauses - everything else being subservient to this.

You can find out more about good and bad hymn playing HERE.

The most common congregational hymns for each liturgical season, as found in The New English Hymnal and Catholic Hymns Old and New, are included. If you think that others should be arranged, please let me know. pkn@pnms.co.uk.
