Job SummaryThe Organist at St. John’s is a part-time position reporting to the Music Director. The organist supports the praise of God in worship through excellent musicianship, support of the choir in rehearsal and in worship, robust and sensitive leadership of hymns and service music, and collaboration with soloists and parish musicians. The organist prepares a prelude and postlude for each Sunday of the church year - in consultation with the Music Director and with an eye to the church season and the Sunday scripture readings - and is able to improvise to cover liturgical movement. Organist:-Supports congregational worship through leadership of hymns and service music on Sundays, Christmas, Holy Week and Easter.-Prepares and offers a prelude and postlude for each Sunday service with sensitivity to the liturgical season and Sunday scripture texts.-Supports the choir by accompanying them on the organ for anthems when needed.-Collaborates with the Music Director to deliver excellence in musical programming.-Collaborates with the Rector and Staff to promote lively, creative and spirit-filled worship.Accompanist: -Supports the choir during rehearsal and services on the piano or organ.-Supports soloists or parish musicians in rehearsal and services.Other Duties:-Collaborates with the Music Director on the Care and Maintenance of the Organ.-Provides information on Preludes and Postludes to the Music Director for licensing clearance.-Provides information about Preludes and Postludes to the Office Manager for inclusion in the Worship Bulletin in a timely manner. -Collaborates with the Music Director in maintenance of the Music Library as it pertains to music for the Organ.-Provides organ music for weddings and funerals on the basis of first-refusal and for an honorarium paid by the family.Requirements: -Believes in the core values and mission of St. John’s church. -Values team work and musical excellence. -Eschews gossip and triangulation in favor of direct communication.-Ability to be organized, multitask and be flexible as needs change in the ministrySkills Required:-Organ and piano mastery.-Deep knowledge of sacred music repertoire-Highly organized and detail-oriented-Shows pride in work-Open to dialogue and change.
