Musical Requirements:

We seek to appoint a new Director of Music and Organist who will further enrich our worship, develop our musical tradition, help extend our mission, and create beautiful music for the glory of God.

About Saint Luke’s
We are a parish in the catholic tradition of the Church of England, in the diverse area of Shepherd’s Bush in West London. You can find out about us on our website: www.stlukesw12.com

Music at Saint Luke’s
In recent years we have developed the musical tradition of the parish. We make use of several congregational Mass settings in different liturgical seasons; we sing hymns drawn from the New English Hymnal, but also from some other sources, including some modern worship music; we have become familiar with the plainchant tradition. We also enlist visiting professional singers and instrumentalists to join us for feast days and special occasions.

The main sung service is the Parish Mass at 10am each Sunday morning. A few times a year, for feast days, the Mass is moved to 5pm on Sunday. A list of additional days when the Director of Music is expected to play/direct is available on request.

The church is a fine and distinctive example of British modernist architecture with an excellent acoustic for organ and choral performance. The organ is an excellent Wyvern digital instrument with two manual and pedals, physical drawstops and a generous specification. It is in a good state of repair and produces a sound that exceeds usual expectations of such instrument – helped by high quality speakers and the church’s acoustic.

Music Development
In an exciting development, our new Director of Music will launch the parish’s new choral scholarship scheme, offering four places for an auditioned SATB choir to enhance our worship and take our music tradition forward. It is envisaged that these scholars would be London-based students with some singing experience who will sing as a choir 2-3 times per month, and a cantor on the remaining Sundays. This would enable a greater diversity and higher quality of music in our liturgies, to include chant, polyphony, the Anglican choral tradition, and modern choral works. Around half of the funding for this scheme is in place, and the new Director of Music will take an active part in realising further funding, both for the development of this scheme and the wider musical offering at the parish.

Core Duties
● play the organ and direct the choral scholars on Sunday mornings and other services
● rehearse the scholars before services
● engage in fundraising to secure the scholarships; audition and recruit choral scholars
● oversee all resources for music-making including the organ and music library

Skills and Qualities
● A church musician with a sympathy for the liturgy
● Proven experience accompanying congregational worship and choirs to a high standard
● Experience of training, rehearsing and conducting choral singers
● Ability to work collaboratively with the Vicar
● Ability and enthusiasm in recruiting, managing and training choral scholars and to foster these relationships as part of our mission
● Good administrative and planning abilities
● Open to development of the role based on their own abilities and interests and the mission of the parish

The appointed candidate need not necessarily be a Christian, but should be in sympathy with the mission and ministry of the Church of England.

Remuneration and Terms
● The role of Director of Music is offered with remuneration of £4,800-£6,000 pa (£400-£500 per month) according to skills and experience.
