Musical Requirements:
St Mary’s, Acton is an inclusive Anglican parish in the Diocese of London. We are looking for a reliable organist to
play for our principal Sunday service and occasional offices. This is a straightforward playing role with no
administrative duties and no fixed attendance requirement for any services.
The organist plays for the 10:30 am Sung Eucharist each Sunday, arriving by 10:00 am. Most services finish between
11:30 am and 11:45 am. Most services have three hymns. The organist plays their choice of appropriate pre-service
music and voluntaries, and their choice of music during communion on both the piano and the organ. Hymns are
traditional, largely drawn from the New English Hymnal, and chosen in advance by the Artistic Director. There is no
requirement to attend every week: the organist is engaged on a per-service basis, and there is no entitlement to leave.
Where the organist is unavailable, they will make their best efforts to arrange a deputy from an existing list.
The organist reports to the church’s Artistic Director, Luca Wetherall, who handles all administration, service
planning, and liaison with clergy. The organist’s sole responsibility is to play well.
The church has a three-manual Walker organ and an excellent Seiler grand piano.
For the right candidate, there is scope for additional paid work: accompanying a choir for special services, playing for
external services, and contributing to the parish’s concert programme.
FEE — £100 per service, paid monthly (£130 per service for Christmas Eve Midnight Mass and Christmas Day
morning)
ESTIMATED ENGAGEMENTS — 52–60 per year (£5,200–£6,000 based on 100% attendance)
COMMITMENT — Flexible; no fixed attendance requirement
ADMINISTRATION — None
INSTRUMENTS — Three-manual Walker organ; Seiler grand piano
TRADITION — Liberal Anglo-Catholic; traditional hymnody and congregational mass setting
REPORTS TO — Luca Wetherall, Artistic Director; the Churchwardens and the PCC
