We are looking for an enthusiastic, talented and able musician to take up the post of Organist for Christ Church, East Sheen (SW14). The successful applicant will play the organ (3 manuals and pedals, electro-pneumatic, recently fully professionally overhauled and maintained) at services and we would encourage and support the successful applicant to develop a varied programme of musical activities and events, with which to attract and serve the local community.
Christ Church, East Sheen, is a Church of England church in south west London with a “central” and inclusive tradition, and with strong local community connections. Our services are popular but we are trying to make our ‘All Age’ third Sunday service (at which there is usually an instrumental group, run by a member of the congregation, with whom the organist would work and would have oversight) less formal and more ‘family friendly’. We want to encourage more families who come occasionally to our services to become part of the church.
The role of Organist would suit a positive, energetic and creative person with a sound musical background, a willingness to embrace a range of musical styles and take a lead role in connecting Christ Church with its local community using music.
We are looking for someone to work with our existing team to build a strong message which realises our vision of being a thriving church and welcoming community in this part of the wider Mortlake with East Sheen team ministry. We see this appointment as part of the revival of Christ Church and its congregation in line with our Mission Action Plan.
S/he will be responsible for strengthening our music during worship and also for encouraging relationships with other musicians who might use the building, as well as possibly offering other musical activity during the week (such as concerts and recitals) so that Christ Church becomes a place noted for the excellence of its music.
We also have a number of weddings, funerals and other special services in the church each year, at which the post holder would have the sole right to play, or for which they will make alternative arrangements.
In addition to Sunday services we have annual services on Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday. At Christmas there is a Carol Service, a very well attended Crib Service, Midnight Mass and a non-Eucharistic service on Christmas Day. Local schools also usually require an organist for their carol services held in church in December. At Easter there is a service on Good Friday in addition to services on Easter Day, and we hold our patronal festival on Ascension Day.
The Organist would also be expected to work with the organists/Directors of Music at the patronal services in the other two churches in the team (on St Mary's Day and All Saints Day). Choirs from all three churches (we have a small but loyal Festival Choir which sings at these and could be used at other services, though a particular role in developing a choir is not expected of this post) usually join together on our three parish patronal festivals.
Post subject to a three-month probationary period.
Remuneration and fees in line with Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) guidelines (see job description).
Holiday entitlement: 5 weeks.
This appointment will pay a decisive part in delivering our Mission Action Plan at Christ Church, and we warmly encourage all suitable candidates to apply.
To apply, please send a CV and covering letter, explaining the ways in which you meet the criteria set out in the Job Description and Person Specification, to The Revd David Guest (email@example.com) by September 27th, 2018.
We expect to hold interviews for this post in October.
