Musical Requirements:

St John the Evangelist Parish Church in Clevedon and Fr Brendan Clover, the parish priest, are looking for a Director of Music.

St John’s has remained open during the pandemic and we have live-streamed the Eucharist every single day. The choir, dispersed by COVID, is beginning to return, and new initiatives in our parish school may see the formation of a children’s choir rehearsing at an After School Club on Friday afternoons. Fr Brendan is a former Cathedral Chorister, Cambridge Choral Scholar, and Cathedral Precentor, and he, with the parish, is looking to develop the musical offering in the tradition of Eucharistic worship and the Office.

The Sunday Eucharist/Parish Mass is at 10.30am. It includes a sung setting with congregational participation, but there is scope for the choir to learn and perform the Kyrie and Agnus Dei,1 and an anthem or motet. There is also the possibility of developing a sung BCP Evensong depending on our ability to recruit. We do not anticipate discontinuing our use of the musical resources supplied by the Church of England to supplement our parish resources and we are committed to continue live-streaming our services..

On Solemnities and Feast Days there is Solemn Mass at 7.30pm. There are carol services at Christmas and special services in Advent and Lent. The Triduum is fully observed. There are occasional offices, mostly funerals, but the hope that the frequency of marriages might increase.

This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys developing new things but who also has the ability to lead, and to accompany on the organ or piano.

Apart from choosing one of the finest architects of his day, William Butterfield, Sir Arthur commissioned ‘Father’ Willis to build the organ. Being relatively small – just two manuals with pedals – it is ideally suited to the building and of great tonal quality.

If you are interested in investigating this further please contact Fr Brendan Clover on 07968 505643 in the first instance.

Other details:

We seek an accomplished organist and pianist with a proven track-record, and one sensitive and in sympathy with the Anglo-Catholic tradition. Choir training skills are highly desirable and the enthusiasm to build and lead a choral tradition. The present congregation of over 70 sing extrememly well, and the congregation normally sit to enjoy final voluntaries (plus applause). Music is taken seriously at St. John's and much appreciated.
