About The Schola Cantorum at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, New Malden
St Joseph’s Catholic Church, New Malden has a 12-person strong Schola Cantorum, who sing the traditional Roman Catholic Liturgy at the 11:30 Mass. This Mass is not a full Latin Mass, but a mixture of English and Latin. Each week, the Schola sing the Simple Propers of the Mass (Plainchant), the Responsorial Psalm, and a polyphonic motet from our repertoire of renaissance and modern Music. Our choir of volunteers dedicate one hour of their Sunday mornings for a rehearsal before Mass (usually from 10am). Once per month, we have a later rehearsal at 10:45am, with a reduced Music list. Our Organ Gallery is dedicated to Pope Saint Gregory the Great (father of Gregorian Chant) and to Saint Cecilia, the patroness of musicians. Our current Director of Music is Mr Peter Morrell, a Freelance Music Teacher and Vocal Coach from New Malden.
