Fr Jeffrey Downie
St. Luke's Catholic Church,
St. Luke's is a young, large, diverse, friendly and welcoming community, with a typical Sunday attendance of 600 and rising, increasing to 1,000 at Christmas and Easter. There are 4 weekend Masses and the Director of Music would concentrate particularly on the 10.30am Mass, plus one other, with two practices currently on a Friday evening. There are a number of funerals throughout the year and occassional weddings which all attract an additional fee. Some additional attendance would be negotiated for the Easter Triduum and Christmas.
There is a small adult choir along with a new childrens choir and we would be looking particularly for someone with the skills and experience to continue their growth and development. Strong gifts in making music with children would be essential. A new three form entry parish primary school opening in September next year will present further opportunities.
All three parish clergy and our congregation highly value the role of music in our liturgical life and would be very supportive. There is, however, a lot of work to be done!
Currently the Director of Music both directs the choirs and provides the accompaniment for Mass, however the role could be split between two people. At present there is a new Clavinova but no organ, although there is the possibility of exploring the installation of a suitable instrument. The salary would be realistic and very competitive according to qualifications and experience, upto £7,500. Deputies are available and the opportunities endless.
Please contact the parish priest for an initial informal discussion or to ask any questions.
