St Stephen’s with St Julian’s is seeking to appoint a gifted, collaborative and encouraging Director of Music and Organist to lead and develop the musical life of our parish.
Music is an integral part of our worship and a longstanding part of our tradition. We value the richness of Anglican choral music and want to grow that tradition for the future. We currently have a small adult choir which we would like to develop, and we are keen to establish a junior choir.
We are a church passionate about inclusion and welcome. We are looking for someone who will help us develop music as a ministry of worship, community and mission, enabling people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in the praise of God.
The current service pattern includes a 10.00am Sung Holy Communion service each Sunday, with additional seasonal services such as Ash Wednesday, Ascension Day, Holy Week, Advent and Christmas. There is also scope to develop music for our monthly Café Church service, including the possibility of forming a small worship group. Although we do not currently have evening services, we hope in time to reintroduce Choral Evensong.
The role is initially for approximately six hours per week and will include Sunday worship, adult choir rehearsal, planning and preparation, and the development of a junior choir. Occasional offices may be available by agreement and paid separately.
Salary will be, dependent on qualifications and experience and taking into consideration the Royal School of Church Music and Musician’s Union recommendations, £12000-15000 per annum dependent on experience. The post includes six Sundays’ annual leave per year and a workplace pension scheme in accordance with statutory requirements and is initially offered as a 3 year fixed term contract with the hope this will be extended to a permanent contract.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished musician, confident organist, encouraging choir leader and collaborative colleague. They will share our desire to honour tradition while exploring new musical possibilities.
