Fr. Tom Pyke
Christ Church Vicarage,
Isle of Dogs,
Parish Mass at 11am on Sundays which has a sung mass setting (Thorne) and four hymns with organ (and if desired, piano) accompaniment. The Director of Music will need to be able to ad lib with ease and provide accompaniment to the liturgy. Mixed ability choir which sings 4-part hymns at the 11am service and rehearses on a midweek evening (currently Wednesday from 6-7pm). During lockdown we made recordings, part-by-part of many hymns based on playbacks provided by the Director of Music. Members of the choir often find this helpful to support the learning and preparation process, and we would appreciate if the new Director of Music would be able to do so. It is our ambition to include anthems during communion on festive days as well.
The organ is a large 3 manual Lewis instrument, with a console near the choir. It was restored and augmented by Noel Mander in the 20th century. It is well-cared for within the resources of the Parish, with more potential for further restorations. We also have a chamber organ, built by Noel Mander for intimate pieces and baroque styles. Our piano is an Ibach baby grand with a nice tone and action.
During COVID we discovered as a church how flexible we can be with our online offering. The Director of Music had a leading role in helping us develop resources to keep our congregation engaged, as well as putting together our cultural programme in conversation with the vicar. Beyond COVID it has become part of our mission to livestream our major services (one or two per term). We have a professional PTZ camera, and a knowledgeable volunteer who understands how to run OBS (broadcasting software), Restream, as well as the rota of setting up live streams on YouTube. Experience of live-streaming and recording services will not be a requirement, but a valuable asset in the new Director of Music role. Examples of our live-streamed services can be found on our parish website www.parishiod.org.uk
