OUR LADY OF GRACE AND ST
EDWARD?S CHURCH, CHISWICK, W4 (3 YEAR FIXED TERM)

A Director of the
Children?s Choir is required for the parish of Our Lady of Grace and St
Edward?s, Chiswick from September 2018.

The successful candidate
will establish, direct and develop a Children?s Choir with the
assistance of the Parish. The Children?s Choir will sing each Sunday
morning during school term time at the 9.45am Family Mass, as well over
Christmas, Holy Week and Easter, and will rehearse on one weekday late
afternoon/early evening for one and a half hours concurrent with the
performance schedule.

There will be two consecutive Sundays off
after Christmas and Easter, together with six consecutive Sundays off
over the summer holidays, thus a working schedule of forty-two weeks a
year.

The post holder will report to the Parish Priest, consult him
on a proposed repertoire and development strategies for the choir, and,
finally, take direction from him in all matters pertaining to the choir.

i The Ad: The Roman Catholic parish of St. John the Evangelist, Horsham
wishes to appoint a Director of Music. The parish currently has no paid
organists or formal choir: as such, the appointee will benefit from the
opportunity to develop, initially, an entirely new junior choir and in
due course, one or more adult choirs, recruited both from the parish
(which is a thriving community with a large number of enthusiastic youth
and two primary schools both with existing choirs) and the wider
community. Horsham has a thriving musical scene, with a symphony
orchestra and several secular choirs. The primary purpose of the new
choirs will be to sing Chant and motets at the 9:15 Mass on Sundays, as
well as on major feast days including Christmas and the Easter Triduum
and special events, First Holy Communions, weddings, funerals etc. The
job represents an exciting opportunity to establish and develop a choral
tradition which it is hoped will last for generations to come.
The
appointee will be expected to oversee attainment of RSCM affiliation for
the junior choir, and to implement its ?Voice for Life? training scheme
for future choristers. The appointee will benefit from the full support
of the Parish Priest, with whom they will work closely, and that of the
whole congregation.
The salary, broadly in line with current RSCM
rates, will be determined on the basis of qualifications, experience,
level of availability and by negotiation with the successful applicant,
and will be payable either by hourly rate or annual salary. The church
is willing to demonstrate flexibility in renegotiating the remuneration
should the workload increase over time.

The successful applicant must
have experience as a choral director and be sympathetic to
traditional-style Roman Catholic liturgy, with a working knowledge of
Gregorian plainchant and Renaissance polyphony. A competent organist
would also be preferred. Applicants will be energetic, dynamic,
innovative and able to establish a rapport with young singers: a full
DBS check and references will therefore be required. The parish is open
to considering younger candidates with a choral/organ scholar background
keen to gain experience of building and directing a choir.
Please apply
by email to stjohnshorshamchoir@gmail.com or by letter marked ?Director
of Music Application? to The Parish Priest, The Presbytery, 3

i The Ad: Organ Scholarship 2018-19

St John the Evangelist Palmers
Green (London N13) is currently seeking an Organ Scholar for the
academic year 2018-19 commencing in September. St John?s Organ
Scholarship is a flexible programme tailored to the interests of the
Scholar and offers annual remuneration of ?500 to go towards lessons,
scores and educational courses.

The core of the Scholarship programme
focuses on developing dynamic and intelligent hymn and chant
accompaniment skills, liturgical awareness, and rehearsal accompaniment,
but also includes scope for the scholar to explore and develop
approaches to choral conducting, sacred composition, continuo playing
and secular performance as part of our Summer Concert Series and
Christmas Early Music Festival.

Working under the tutelage of our
Director of Music and alongside the choir, the Scholar will grow in
confidence and ability in working within a church setting, and our
Scholarship is an excellent springboard for further study or a career in
church music. In September, our current Scholar, James Hendy, will be
moving on to Cambridge where he has been appointed Junior Organ Scholar
at Robinson College.

The Scholar is expected to play for at least two
Sunday morning Services per month, weekly rehearsals with the adult
choir on Thursday evenings, and one Evensong Service bi-monthly. Tuition
in church music skills is provided as part of the Scholarship by the
Director of Music who will also help the Scholar with applications to
further opportunities.

Prospective applicants should have sufficient
playing skill and sight-reading ability to handle a large amount of
music, as well as having an independent drive to practice their
instrument and improve their skills. It is therefore recommended that
applicants currently possess minimum ABRSM Grade 5 in Organ, or
equivalent ability, and have good organisational skills and enthusiasm
for liturgical music.

To apply, please send an up-to-date CV with a
covering letter to the Director of Music, Robert Hainault, c/o St John?s
Parish Office: stjohnspg@gmail.com

If you have any questions, or
would like to discuss the programme with the Director, he can be

ASSISTANT MUSICAL DIRECTOR (Maternity Cover)

The New Tottenham Singers, a non-audition amateur choir based in Tottenham, North London, is seeking an Assistant Musical Director to provide maternity cover for initially one term.  This is a particularly exciting time for the choir in terms of projects and programmes, and the AMD role is crucial to the success of the performances.

The choir rehearses on Tuesday evenings with additional Saturday rehearsals in preparation for performances.  The Autumn Term runs from Tuesday 4th September to Tuesday 11th December, with concert dates booked on Saturday 10th November and Saturday 15th December alongside additional Saturday rehearsals, some still TBC.  Tuesday rehearsals are remunerated at £50 and Saturday rehearsals and concert days at £100 unless stated otherwise.

Key roles, responsibilities and dates are as follows:

-                      To provide accompaniment and/or lead sectionals on Tuesday evenings from 7.30pm - 9.30pm as required at £50 per rehearsal (Autumn Term: 15 Tuesdays x £50 = £750);

-                      To play the keyboard part in the orchestra for a Concert of Remembrance on Saturday 10th November with a rehearsal from 2pm on the day and an orchestra rehearsal on Saturday 13th October from 10.30am - 5pm (£200 flat fee for both);

-                      To attend a rehearsal on Saturday 27th October with choir, soloists and orchestra from 11.30am - 6pm (£100);

-                      To play in the Christmas Concert with rehearsal on Saturday 15th December (£100).

There will also be at least one (probably two) more Saturday rehearsal(s) during the Autumn Term which are not yet fixed in the choir diary and are therefore open to negotiation which would be remunerated at £100 each.

We are therefore looking for an extremely competent pianist, accompanist and well-rounded musician in terms of musical genres with strong sight-reading skills who is able to direct sectional rehearsals and, if necessary, direct the whole choir.  Competence as an organist is desirable, but not essential.

This is an exciting opportunity to gain further experience of choral accompaniment and leadership with a friendly, sociable choir that enjoys a diverse range of ages and abilities within its membership.

Interviews and primary auditions are provisionally scheduled for Saturday 16th June with short-listed candidates being invited to attend a mutually convenient subsequent Tuesday rehearsal in July.  Please therefore indicate in your application if you are unavailable on Saturday 16th June, which will not present a barrier to your application.

Applicants should write to the Musical Director, Tom Fowkes, at director@tottenhamsingers.com with a covering letter/email outlining your skills, experience and reasons for interest in the position alongside a CV and any footage and/or recordings of your work that may be available by the closing date of Saturday 2nd June 2018.

Further information regarding The New Tottenham Singers is available at www.tottenhamsingers.com and www.youtube.com/user/atubec.

St James-the-Great with St Mark’s Woodmancote, Dursley, Gloucestershire

Assistant Director of Music

St James’ Church is a friendly supportive Anglican community in the heart of Dursley which has enjoyed an unbroken tradition of excellent church music since the time of the Oxford Movement in the mid 19th century. Since 1933, there have been just three Directors of Music, and the choir’s repertoire is considerable numbering around thirty settings of the Mass, around twenty-five settings of the Evening Canticles (with six sets of responses) and literally hundreds of motets/anthems. In the past the choir has made around two Cathedral visits each year, and, as well as the “local” cathedrals of Gloucester and Bristol, has sung further afield in Brecon, Birmingham, Hereford etc. It is hoped to resume these visits in the near future The church is used as a concert venue by local music groups and schools.

St Mark’s Church was built as a chapel-of-ease in 1848. About five minutes walk from St James it is supported by a small but devoted congregation. The choir sings for occasional services, but the Director of Music and his Assistant regularly accompany the 11.30am Sunday service which alternates BCP Matins, Common Worship Matins and Common Worship Communion.

The Choir currently comprises some 14 trebles/sopranos, 8 altos, 6 tenors and 6 basses with an average Sunday attendance of 26. The main Sunday service is the 10.00am Parish Communion (Common Worship)  at which the choir sings a setting of the Mass, a Psalm (to Anglican chant) and a Communion anthem as well as leading the congregation in the singing of four hymns. BCP Evensong at 6.30 is sung with Introit, a setting of the Responses and Canticles, and an anthem; usually on two Sundays a month – unless replaced by “occasional” services such as Carol Services, Remembrance, Major Festivals etc. All-age services happen once a month, and for these the choir is not required. The choir does not meet during the month of August.

Rehearsals take place for 30 minutes before each service, and each Friday from 7.00 – 8.00pm for the Juniors (when we have any!) and from 7.30 – 8.45pm for the Seniors.

The Organ in St James’ dates from 1888, and was originally built by Hill. Over the years it has had many additions and today has three manuals and forty-seven speaking stops. It features in the “Coffee Cake and Music” organ recital series which takes place on the last Saturday in the month from April to September.

The Organ in St Mark’s is a large two manual digital instrument by Rodgers dating from about 2002. It sounds well in the church’s helpful acoustic.

The position is currently available and the appointment will be subject to a probationary period of three months.

Key Duties

To support the Director of Music at agreed services by either playing the organ or conducting the choir

To attend Friday rehearsals and take them if the Director of Music is absent

To assist in the training of new and junior choristers

To share the playing at services for which there is no choir (e.g. All-age service)

Cowley

St John Parish

Our parish was formed in 1870 from the historic parish of Cowley St James to serve Oxford?s rapidly growing, mostly working class, eastern suburb. Its first incumbent was Fr Richard Benson, also superior of the newly formed Anglican monastic community, the Society of St John the Evangelist (the ?Cowley Fathers?). This inheritance continues today in a wholly ?inclusive? expression of Catholic Anglicanism, marked by a strong eucharistic focus, commitment to the Daily Offices, and outreach to the poor, homeless, mentally ill, and new immigrant communities in East Oxford. The parish consists of two churches ? St Mary and St John on the Cowley Road, and the former ?mission? church of St Alban?s nearby in Charles Street. Attendance at the main (10.45) sung eucharist at St Mary and St John is currently ca.

50-100, depending on the season. Attendees are overwhelmingly local residents, and although the area is rapidly gentrifying, Cowley St John is Oxfordshire?s most economically, socially, and racially diverse parish. We are particularly keen to enhance our ministry to the area?s large population of students and younger families.

St Mary & St John

Church

For his new church of St Mary and St John, Father Benson commissioned as architect Alfred Mowbray, son of the Oxford Movement publisher and printer Alfred Richard Mowbray. Building commenced in 1875, with consecration in 1883, followed by the addition of the west tower by Mowbray in 1892-3. Large vestries were added in 1912. Due to lack of funds, much of the decorative stonework in the church was left unfinished, but the building is an impressive architectural essay in Anglo-Catholic theology and liturgy by design, rather than adaptation, with its voluminous nave and aisles dramatically focussed on the climax of the elevated chancel, high altar, and carved and painted reredos

(1918) by Cecil Hare, assistant to G F Bodley.

Music at St Mary &

St John

The Organ. Before 1950, a series of smaller organs were housed above the north or south chancel, with choir stalls below, all since removed. The present organ of 38 stops and three manuals is a fine instrument, well-suited to the large volume of the building. Its origins (ca. 1850) were as the instrument for Oxford?s St Michael-at-the-Northgate, but rebuilt with three manuals by Norman and Beard (1914), and brought to St Mary and St John in 1940. It was entirely overhauled at the cost of some ?200,000 in 2010, and is in excellent working order, housed in a gallery above the west end.

The

Choir  During the heyday of attendance numbers, ca. 1900-70, the church had a large robed choir, and from that period dates an enviable music library of four-part ?cathedral? repertoire. At present there is a very dedicated, but very small, core of singers (4-6, often just short of

SATB) who meet before the 10.45 service to rehearse hymns, psalms, and an anthem (usually taken from the Oxford Anthem Book). The choir presently sings from the west gallery around the organ console, with occasional forays to the north aisle at a grand piano (Bluthner).

The Congregation  Service music is sung congregationally (at present Murray, with Merbecke in Advent and Lent), as are Psalms (Anglican chant). We are a hymn-loving parish, and have recently invested in a full new set of the 2013 edition of Ancient & Modern (words-only for pew copies; full music for choir).

15 Feb 2018

The Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Cuddington in Worcester Park is seeking to appoint an Organist and Choir Director.

St. Mary’s has a long choral tradition and the choir is RSCM affiliated. The Communion service at 9.30 am is sung, using David Thorne’s Mass of St. Thomas setting. The choir also lead a monthly choral Evensong and there is scope for additional concerts and services. Hymns are mainly from Common Praise.

The church has a fine three-manual Father Willis organ, enlarged and modified in 1974 and 2010.
